Travelers from these countries now have the opportunity to extend their stay during a layover in Munich and explore the Bavarian state capital and its surrounding area. The joint initiative launched in the spring, initially covering Singapore and the USA. With this expansion into five additional international markets, even more international guests now have the chance to enjoy a short getaway in Munich and Bavaria.

For many Lufthansa passengers, the Munich hub serves as their first point of contact with Bavaria. The Stopover Program offers ideas on how to utilize a layover for a visit to Munich and the region. Currently, twelve partners are involved in the program, providing hotel accommodations, rental cars, sightseeing opportunities, and shopping options. Visitors can plan their time flexibly, with stays ranging from 24 hours to seven days. The Stopover Program can be booked via the Lufthansa website (www.lufthansa.com).

"Many passengers want to do more than just transfer at our hub; they want to discover Munich and Bavaria as an additional travel destination. With the Lufthansa Stopover Program, we offer the opportunity to enrich their air travel with an extra destination, allowing them to experience local culture, cuisine, and tourist attractions. In the long term, we plan to expand the program to include further markets and tourism partners, offering international travelers an even wider range of attractive options in Munich and Bavaria," says Heiko Reitz, Lufthansa Executive Board Member and Hub Manager Munich. "Bavaria is one of Germany’s most popular travel destinations. Through the stopover program, we are working with Lufthansa to create additional opportunities to attract international travelers to Munich and the region. Local tourism providers and other businesses stand to benefit from this. The project demonstrates how Munich Airport and Lufthansa can link international demand with what the region has to offer," says Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport.

About Lufthansa Group

The Lufthansa Group is a global aviation group with operations worldwide. The goal of the new brand identity is to make the strength of the Lufthansa Group more visible. For customers, service offerings will be bundled under the Group brand, making them even more clearly recognizable.

Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer Lufthansa Group:
“The Lufthansa Group is evolving from a group of airlines into an integrated airline group. The new brand identity is therefore more than just a redesign; it is a strategic milestone. In a challenging environment, this step creates a visual anchor of trust for our customers. A visual identity in aviation must do much more than just create an eye-catching appearance. It will reflect our strategic brand values and a promise we want to make to our passengers across all our brands. The new brand identity enables a holistic brand experience, provides orientation, and strengthens identification with the Lufthansa Group”.

The new brand identity is recognizable by the iconic crane logo, which will be used for the Group in the future without the surrounding circle. In addition, there is a new font and a color palette expanded by six new tones. The latter represents different heights from the ground to the sky to reflect the diversity of the Lufthansa Group. The airlines of the Lufthansa Group will keep their own brands under the umbrella of the strengthened group brand. The endorsement of “Member of Lufthansa Group,” which will appear on all aircraft belonging to the Group’s airlines, signals the unity of the individual airlines that operate under a brand name other than Lufthansa. The addition was already introduced this year on digital boarding passes, websites, and 160 aircraft of various Lufthansa Group airlines. Next year, the Lufthansa Group brand will also be visible at lounge entrances worldwide, as is already the case in Rome, Milan, and Brussels. The “Member of Lufthansa Group” label will also be visible on materials at airports, such as baggage tags, and on board of aircraft.

The Lufthansa Group is the fourth-largest airline group in the world in terms of revenue and fleet size. It operates five national airlines, other private travel-oriented airlines, Lufthansa Cargo, Lufthansa Technik, and over 300 subsidiaries and affiliated companies under one roof.

Asia Pacific

The Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) and Europe's leading aviation group concluded the transaction today. As a result, the Lufthansa Group has a 41 percent stake in the Italian airline ITA Airways. The remaining 59 percent will initially continue to be held by MEF.

The two parties had already agreed in May 2023 that Deutsche Lufthansa AG would acquire a minority stake of 41 percent in ITA Airways. The European Commission had recently approved the participation by approving the remedies on 29 November 2024. Other competition authorities outside the EU have since also approved the participation.

The first step of the investment was implemented today by means of a capital increase of 325 million euros. Options for the acquisition of the remaining shares in ITA Airways have been agreed between the Lufthansa Group and MEF and can be exercised from this year. With today's transaction, ITA Airways is part of the Lufthansa Group and will be the Group's fifth network airline.

Carsten Spohr, Chief Executive Officer Deutsche Lufthansa AG, says:

“We are proud to finally welcome ITA Airways to the Lufthansa Group. I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this, especially in Rome, Brussels, Berlin and Frankfurt. The ITA Airways team has written an impressive success story in recent years and, with great energy, passion and expertise, has built an airline that is already the pride of an entire nation. We look forward to continuing this success story of ITA Airways together. With our investment, we will now strengthen the Italian and European aviation market and the position of the Lufthansa Group as number one in Europe. Our joint passengers worldwide will benefit from improved offers and optimized connections as early as this upcoming summer flight schedule.”

Italy will thus become a further “home market” for the Lufthansa Group. The country is already the company's second most important international market after the USA, outside the existing home markets of Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Belgium. The five-star Rome Fiumicino Airport will be the sixth and southernmost Lufthansa Group hub. Milan-Linate, as a metropolitan airport in the economically strong northern Italy region with the second largest catchment area in the EU, will play a prominent role in the Group.

Timely integration

ITA Airways will be retained as a strong brand and developed further. With today's closing of the transaction, the Lufthansa Group and ITA Airways can conclude the first cooperation agreements for their passengers. In a few weeks, ITA Airways frequent flyers will be able to collect their points or miles either in ITA Airways' existing “Volare” program or already in Miles & More, the Lufthansa Group's loyalty program. In addition, Miles & More participants will have the opportunity to earn and redeem miles on ITA Airways flights. Further collaborations, such as joint codeshare connections, mutual use of the respective lounges and the planned admission to the Star Alliance aviation alliance, are to follow successively. Further details will be communicated to customers and partners in a timely manner.

ITA Airways (IATA flight number code “AZ”) is a young airline that has been growing since it started operating in 2021. This means that the previous year's result was exceeded by 28 percent in October 2024. By the end of the year, a total of more than 500,000 bookings have been confirmed. Never before in the more than 20-year cooperation between Lufthansa and Deutsche Bahn (DB) have so many travelers opted for the joint offer as in 2024.

Due to the high demand, the range of feeder destinations to Frankfurt Airport – one of the largest airports in Europe – is being steadily expanded: this year it has grown by 4 to a total of 28 cities within Germany. New to the list are the cities of Augsburg, Siegburg/Bonn, Wolfsburg and Essen. This means that more than twice as many cities will be connected by Lufthansa Express Rail than Lufthansa currently does by flight. Thanks to the large number of Sprinter connections, passengers can travel faster between the metropolises with shorter journey times. In addition to the domestic German connections, the cooperation also relies on an international connection between Munich Central Station and Zurich Airport, with a possible boarding in Bregenz, Austria. This ideally complements the offer to the hub of the Lufthansa Group Airline SWISS. The number of feeder trains is also increasing: DB and Lufthansa are offering more than 240 daily ICE connections with a Lufthansa flight number (codeshare numbers).

Michael Peterson, DB Board Member for Long-Distance Passenger Transport: "More and more people are taking advantage of a climate-friendly journey to their flight. Together with Lufthansa, we are delighted with the passenger record. The networking of the two modes of transport, rail and air, is very much in vogue. Our intermodal offering is growing continuously – our passengers benefit greatly in particular from the ICE Sprinter network with extra-fast connections between the metropolises."

Dieter Vranckx, Member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG: "We are constantly expanding our cooperation with Deutsche Bahn and thus offering our customers flexible travel options. With additional connections, an increased frequency and more comfort, we have made the Lufthansa Express Rail service attractive to more and more guests in recent years. Connecting air and rail even better in the future will only be possible with an efficient and modern infrastructure. We could offer our customers even better travel and transfer services at the Lufthansa hub in Munich if the airport were connected to Deutsche Bahn's long-distance services. That is why Munich urgently needs an ICE connection. “

Lufthansa and Deutsche Bahn are continuously focusing on the expansion of joint offers for trains to flights. For more than 20 years, the cooperation between the two partners has enabled Lufthansa customers to purchase a combined ticket for train and flight with just one booking step.

In addition to Lufthansa Group airlines, other Star Alliance airlines are now also using the Lufthansa Express Rail service. This is made possible by Deutsche Bahn's membership as an intermodal partner of the Star Alliance. And the program will be further strengthened: For example, United Airlines has been using the Lufthansa Express Rail service since the end of last year and other Star Alliance airlines will follow.

Lufthansa Express Rail – advantages at a glance:

Fast, comfortable and flexible from 28 cities by train to Frankfurt Airport > overview of all cities see infographic

Optimal connections with short transfer times from train to flight

Authorization to use the Fast Lane at Frankfurt Airport

Free rebooking in case of delay

Large overhead bins on the latest generation of trains

Special AiRail terminal for baggage check-in and reclaim at Frankfurt Airport

Priority handling of Express Rail customers' suitcases at Frankfurt Airport

One ticket, two boarding passes – for ICE and connecting flight

Free Wi-Fi on the train

Mileage credit also for the train journey

Access to DB lounges for business and First Class customers

Bookable via all Lufthansa sales channels.

About Lufthansa Group

The Lufthansa Group is an aviation group with operations worldwide. Since then, the Latin American airline has been testing the sharkskin technology in daily operations. Given the proven results, LATAM has now decided to install the innovative film on four additional aircraft. Five AeroSHARK-modified aircraft operated by the subsidiary LATAM Airlines Brazil will soon be cruising the skies.

“Our fleet modernization strategy is a cornerstone of our commitment to sustainability and our vision of achieving net zero by 2050. We remain focused on innovation and the adoption of cutting-edge technologies, ensuring our fleet evolves in line with our environmental goals,” said Sebastián Acuto, Director of Fleet and Projects at LATAM Airlines Group.

Fuel savings confirmed: LATAM tests validate the effect of AeroSHARK

AeroSHARK is a surface film that mimics the flow-optimized structure of sharkskin. Developed jointly by BASF and Lufthansa Technik, it features riblets measuring about 50 micrometers. When several hundred square meters of this film are applied to the fuselage and engine nacelles, it reduces drag, leading to a reduction in fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by around one percent. For LATAM Airlines Brazil’s five Boeing 777-300ER that will be equipped with AeroSHARK, this translates to expected annual savings of up to 2,000 metric tons of kerosene and 6,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions. This is equivalent to approximately 28 scheduled flights from São Paulo to Miami on a Boeing 777.

“LATAM’s decision confirms once again: AeroSHARK works. This further encourages us to use our engineering skills and innovative strength to contribute to aviation with lower CO₂ emissions,” said Robin Johansson, Senior Director Sales Latin America and Caribbean at Lufthansa Technik. “We look forward to collaborating with more customers globally and applying our fuel-saving sharkskin technology to even more aircraft.”

Lufthansa Technik’s goal is to support many more airlines around the world in achieving their sustainability goals. The global MRO market leader and BASF are consistently developing AeroSHARK further. Current areas of focus include approvals for ever larger areas on the Boeing 777-300ER and 777F as well as for further aircraft types. The company recently announced to extend the roll-out of the sharkskin technology to Boeing 777-200ER aircraft. Including LATAM’s first modified 777-300ER, a total of 21 aircraft from different airlines worldwide are now in service with the nature-inspired technology – and the number is steadily increasing. The next modification of an aircraft for LATAM is planned in November of this year.

About Lufthansa Group

The Lufthansa Group is an aviation group with operations worldwide. We look forward to welcoming ITA Airways and its outstanding employees as a new member of our airline family very soon. The decision is also a clear signal for strong air traffic in Europe, which can successfully assert itself in global competition."

Lufthansa Group, the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) and ITA Airways have expressly welcomed the EU Commission's approval under competition law. With this clearance of the competition authority, the way is now clear for the acquisition of a minority stake of 41 percent in ITA Airways (Italia Trasporto Aereo S.p.A.) and the subsequent acquisition of the remaining shares by Deutsche Lufthansa AG for a capital contribution of 325 million euros, which was already agreed in May 2023. The investment will be completed through a capital increase. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2024. This requires both the prior implementation of the remedies negotiated with the EU Commission and the approval of other competition authorities outside the EU. Options for the acquisition of the remaining shares in ITA Airways have been agreed between Lufthansa Group and MEF and can be exercised from 2025 at the earliest.

Following the closing, ITA Airways is to become the fifth network airline to be closely integrated with Lufthansa Group while keeping its brand name ITA Airways. As part of the multi-hub, multi-airline and multi-brand system successfully established by the Lufthansa Group, the Italian airline will utilize numerous synergies, for example in world-wide sales, the loyalty program Miles & More or also in aircraft and fuel purchasing.

This will strengthen and further develop the economic situation of ITA Airways. Italy will become the Lufthansa Group's fifth "home market". It will then be the Lufthansa Group's second largest market in terms of revenue after Germany and the USA. Italy is already the second most important market for the company outside its home markets after the USA. In terms of gross domestic product, Italy is the third largest economy in Europe with a strongly export-oriented economy and one of the most popular vacation destinations worldwide.

Lufthansa Group and ITA Airways are jointly planning a swift integration ITA Airways with its almost 5,000 employees will make the corporate culture of the Lufthansa Group even more international and diverse. Rome-Fiumicino will become the Lufthansa Group's sixth and geographically southernmost hub. Last year, the airport was awarded with five Skytrax stars.

Immediately after the closing, the route networks are to be linked with each other through code sharing so that customers can combine the airlines' offers. This will create over 1,000 new transfer options, creating many more options to destinations in South America, North Africa and the Middle East in particular. ITA Airways will also strengthen competition in Italy, which is currently characterized by a superior position of low-cost airlines.

ITA Airways already focuses on quality and a premium approach with an Italian service culture. Members of its existing loyalty program "Volare" will also be able to collect or use their miles with Miles & More from the first day after the closing. In addition, the respective lounges will be mutually accessible. ITA Airways is aiming to join the Star Alliance in the near future. Commercial processes, IT systems and purchasing processes will be harmonized as quickly as possible in order to exploit the numerous synergy effects.

Carsten Spohr says: "The acquisition of ITA Airways strengthens the internationalization of the Lufthansa Group. We offer our guests a significantly greater choice of connections and destinations, and with the 5-star hub in Rome we are also extending our premium offering and better connecting strategic future markets south of the equator to our network. Despite the comprehensive and far-reaching concessions, the investment in ITA Airways strengthens the Lufthansa Group's position in global competition. We will make ITA Airways a strong and successful part of our company and thus secure its future as an international airline and strong brand. ITA Airways will support us in further expanding our position as Number One in Europe."

The integration of ITA Airways into the airline network of the Lufthansa Group is to start with the closing. The approval of the authorities enables the cooperation between ITA Airways and Lufthansa Group on a commercial and operational level from the date of closing of the transaction. Until then, both companies will continue to act in competition. Following intensive negotiations with the European Commission, the parties have agreed on a package of concessions. This essentially includes the transfer of slots at Milan-Linate Airport to a competitor in short-haul traffic. In the "neighboring traffic" between Italy and the Lufthansa Group's existing home markets, this competitor will take over single routes on which Lufthansa Group Airlines and ITA Airways still operate today as competitors. Additional feeder flights from Rome to hubs of European competitors will also ensure improved competition on long-haul routes from Rome to North America.

About ITA Airways

ITA Airways was founded in November 2020, started its operations on 15 October 2021 and currently has around 4,860 employees. Based in Rome, the airline carried almost 15 million passengers last year and has a modern fleet of 96 Airbus aircraft, including 23 long-haul and 73 short-haul aircraft. The hub in Rome offers ideal conditions for expanding the joint route network towards Africa and Latin America, thus providing customers with improved connections to the southern hemisphere. ITA Airways currently serves a total of 69 destinations.

Airlines,Fleet,Asia Pacific
